Othello: Moor of Venice

Written by William Shakespeare
Starring Gary Stoner as Othello
A co-production with King's Theatre, Southsea

Tackling subjects of racism, belonging, and deception, this is a classic take on a poignant tragedy that mercilessly explores every inch of the human condition.

The Cast

About

A tempestuous journey from scandal and intrigue to lust and vengeance.

Othello is a legend in his own lifetime, noble, brave, victorious. Honest Iago fuels his venom with malignance and hateful contempt. Poignant, intense, heartbreaking; Othello mercilessly explores every inch of the human condition.

Othello’s world will be brought vividly to life as a live string quartet and a stunning ensemble cast combine with some of literature’s most vibrant language and characters. A dangerous tale of ambition, jealousy and love will unfurl as Shakespeare’s classic tale of deception hurtles to its dramatic and poignant conclusion.

Amy Taylor

A co-production with Icarus Theatre Collective and Kings Theatre, Southsea, this production brings music, energy and unity to this infamous and controversial tragedy.

Peter King

A breathtaking nautical set decked out with white boards and ever-burning lights in nets of hempen tackle provided a fitting platform for Iago

★★★★

Tim Mottershead

In an unusual take, almost the entire cast played stringed instruments throughout the production...except Othello - presumably to underline the fact he was an 'outsider'.

[Their] adaptation truly had rebranded Hamlet for the Game of Thrones age. It was daring and experimental and often risky, but it worked and proved that it is indeed a living and ever fluid piece of literature"

"For many reason this play should be seen by everyone. Drama students and theatre-lovers alike will applaud fine acting by the strongest of casts, you would pay a lot of money in the West End for a class act like this"

"Journey’s End’ is very much an ensemble piece and it would be difficult and probably rather unfair to pick out one actor over another. Each and every performance is consummately delivered." Steve Burbridge

"We were treated to a show that was true to the H. P. Lovecraft original and made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I experienced frisson during last night."

★★★★
Max Lewendel’s careful direction makes perfect sense of the tricky text, finding as much humour as possible in the early comic scenes. He keeps his actors on the move, each with purpose and justified intention.
